As we go through this unique moment in time, I hope all of our members, families, and friends are well and safe.
During this time, please be sure to have some type of self-care routine, including training, meditation, fitness, and hygiene. Maintaining a sense of mental balance under duress is an important Ninpo and Life Skill. We must always try to keep our spirit up to the best of our ability, acting from strength and being the best support possible for those around us. Remember that even when the waves are turbulent, deep waters are still. Fear and courage are not mutually exclusive.
As of the end of last year and the start of this year, myself along with our Ninpo US Dojo-cho, have taken important steps to move forward as both a formal organization and martial family. As such, an official structure, including online training was already in the plans. Given current events, the plans still remain, though we must adapt the order of events to suit the moment.
How does someone move forward when there is uncertainty?
We often hear people say to make a plan to achieve our goals. I believe this is a useful tool, but the reality is, when breaking new ground we “don’t know what we don’t know”. This means that when something happens we don’t plan for (which is most of the time) our plan is dead.
Instead of focusing only on a “plan”, consider the idea of a “map”. A plan says that I will take a certain route to get to my destination. Without knowing of possible roadblocks it can be difficult to address adversity.
A map means that when you hit the inevitable roadblock you know there are other routes. You can adapt. It’s also easier to maintain your resolve.
This is true in ninjutsu as well. Before going into a region, a ninja must have a map of topography, people, cuisines, paths, etc. Preparation is essential, both internal and external – mind, spirit, and body.
This is how we proceed. Focus on your destination and know that you can find a path to it. Sometimes you just need to have faith the way will be revealed to you, along with the courage to act without hesitation when it does.
